About Franz Kusserow

Franz Kusserow was a German Jehovah's Witness and the patriarch of a large family known for their persecution during the Holocaust.

Franz was arrested by the Gestapo in May 1936 and remained a prisoner until his liberation on May 30, 1945. He spent most of the war years as a political and religious prisoner at the penitentiary Kassel-Welheiden. During this time, his wife and all of their surviving children were also detained, with most being sent to concentration camps and two of his sons being executed in prisons.

According to daughter Magdalena, Franz returned to his missionary work on the first Sunday following his return home after liberation.

Details about the Kusserow family can be found through the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, including this write-up.
