About Fred Oscar Hinkson

I was born on " Old South Road". so-called, in Cannan, Grafton County, New Hampshire, on the 17th day of December, A.D. 1855; my father's name was Farnum Hickson, and my mother's maiden name was Sabra Ann Bullock, both natives of New Hampshire, their ancestry tracing back to the Revolutionary war: two of my daughters are members of the D.A.R. I know very little of my grandfather and grandmother Hinkson, as they had deceased before I can remember. Grandfather Hinkson's name was Daniel and grandmother Hinkson's maiden name was Cynthia Miner; I have visited both of their graves in old "Cobble Stone Burying ground", not far from our old home. As I have it, there were four boys and two girls in grandfather Hinkson's family, that grew to man and womanhood, a younger son, Leander, having deceased in boyhood, died of typhoid fever. My father's oldest brother, Danial Hinkson, I never saw think he had one son, Chamberlain Hinkson, who was living in New Hampshire, the last I knew of him; the next oldest broghter was George Hinkson, who married Pluma Bullock, my mother's sister; they had one child, Rhoodea Ann, who married Mr. M.J. Sanborn, to whom reference will be hereinafter made; my father was the next oldest son, married as hereinbefore stated, to whom four children were born Georgiannah, who died in infancy; Rhoana, called Annah for short, hereinafter referred to:Mary Addie, also hereinafter referred to, and myself, Fred Oscar, as stated: my father's youngest brother, Horace married a woman by the name of Ellen, I do not know her maiden name, to whom were bron one son, Alfred, the last I knew of him, he lived in McPherson, Kansas, and was said to have quite a family of boys. Father's oldest sister's name was Eleanor, who married a man by the name of Cllinton George, and lived at Canaan Street: they had one son, Irvin True George, to whom reference is hereafter made; father's youngest sister was named Julia, she married a man by the name of George Smith, was living at Livermore Falls, Maine, when I visited them in A.D. 1895; they had one son, Fred Smith, and I think he is still living near their old home. All of my father's brothers and sisters, with the exception of Leander, lived to be past eighty years of age.
I remember grandfather and grandmother Bullock very well; grandfather Bullock's name was Hezekiah, and his wife's name was Mary; they lived near Grafton, in Grafton County, New Hampshire, were natives of the state, their ancestry, too, reaching back to the war of the Revolution. There were seven children, in grandfather Bullock's family, as I have it, four girls and three boys; Ella the oldest daughter, never married; Pluma and Sabra A., marrying as here in stated; Lydia W., the youngest daughter married a man by the name of Luther A. Taber, of Holyoke, Massachusetts; to them were born two sons, Frank L. and Cyrus Hezekiah Taber; Frank is deceased, and "Hezzie" still lives in Holyoke; Arial, the oldest son, married and lived at Alexandria, N.H.; do not recall his wife's name, but was the father of seven children; Martin, a son never married, and Gilbert married and lived at Concord, N.H. do not recall his wfie's name; their family consisted of two children, both girls; the above, to the best of my recollection is about all I know of the genelogy of the Hinkson and Bullock families. My grandfather Bullock lived to be past eight-six years of age, do not know the age of grandmother Bullock, when she died.
About the year A.D. 1913, I sent back there and had some pictures taken of the old home and am inserting herein some cuts taken off the pictures so obtained. The house stook on one side of the road and the barn on the other. The small barn was the horse barn, so-called, think I remember when it was built. From the front view of the house, it will be noticed that there has been an addition buildt onto the east end of the carriage and wood-house, and a small addtion onton the west side of the main house, and also a proch removed from over the fron door; otherwise, the building in both pictures seem to be the same as when we lived there. The pump in the well, hovever, is of more recent origin. We always drew water from the well w'th an old fashioned "well-sweep," so called. I do not suppose you ever saw one, and I do not know whether I can describe it so you can understand or not; a forked pole was set in the fround to stand about ten or twelve feet in length was balanced, the top end to be directly over the well, it being so adjusted that the heavy end of the pole should rest on the ground, which would bring the top end well up in the air; a small pole was then fastened by a loose joint to the top end of the long pole, and was made long enough to reach to the well curb, a bucket was then fastened to the lower end of the small pole, the "old oaken bucket." perhaps - so that as you pulled down on the small pole to lower the bucket into the well, the heavy end of the... [that is the end of the part that I have].
