Fred R. Stiles

HAWLEY - Fred R. Stiles, 91, of West Hill Rd., life-long resident and former selectman, died yesterday at LaBelle Nursing Home, Shelburne Falls, where he had been a patient four days.

Born in Hawley on May 30, 1875, he was the son of Rowland and Ann Eliza (Sturtevant) Stiles. He was the oldest living member of Union Lodge of Odd Fellows, Charlemont.

He had lived here all his life and operated a farm here. He had served the town as selectman, assessor and tax collector.

He and his wife, the former Alta M. Bliss, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 5*. He leaves his widow, two sons, Roland B. and Philip L. Stiles, both of West Hawley; two granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Shelburne Falls. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery, Hawley. There will be no calling hours. [Greenfield Recorder-Gazette, Wed., July 27, 1966]

• Fred married Alta May Bliss on May 4, 1906 at Stamford, VT. Alta was born on Aug 7, 1883 at Savoy, MA, a daughter of Milon A. Bliss and Mary F. (Burnett) Bliss. Alta died on October 17, 1983. [suggested by contributor #47024642]
