SPRINGFIELD - Fred "Fritz" Rechner Jr., 56, of Springfield passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at St. John's Hospice.
Fred was born on November 18, 1952, in Springfield, the son of Frederick Sr. and Mary Evelyn Hickey Rechner. He married Cynthia K. Roy on September 9, 1999, in Springfield.
Fred graduated from Griffin High School. He dedicated thirty-seven years to the U.S. Postal Service before retiring as a distribution clerk.
Fred was known by those close to him as compassionate, generous, and helpful. He enjoyed cooking, grilling out, even making meals for those staying at the Ronald McDonald House, coaching baseball, gardening, traveling, and swimming in his pool.
Fred was preceded in death by his mother.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Rechner of Springfield; two sons, Michael (girlfriend, Nicole) Rechner of Springfield and Jeremy (wife, Gayla) Willis of Petersburg; his daughter, Megan Willis of Springfield; his father, Fred Rechner Sr. of Springfield; his siblings, Trish (husband, Steve) Squires of Springfield and Tom (fiancee, Pam) Rechner of Chatham; his first wife and mother of Michael, Sue Connolly; in addition to one aunt; two great-nephews; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 30, 2009, at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield with Rev. David Hoefler, celebrant. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
