About Freda Frankel
Freda was born in the Proskorov area of Russia. She immigrated to Canada with her mother and siblings in 1912 to join her father and brothers Sam and Saul Daiter settling on a farm in the Jewish agricultural colony of Bird's Hill, Manitoba. She grew up on the farm enjoying a rural life and attended North Springfield School on Lorne Hill Road 3.5 kilometers south from her home on Lorne Hill Road. After helping her family on the farm she found her 1st paid job in the city of Winnipeg as a seamstress. In Winnipeg she met the love of her life Robert Frankel and together they followed Robert's family to Toronto, Ontario. Robert's father Myer was a business man. When he lived in Manitoba he traveled throughout the Province buying fish from the aboriginal fisherman for resale in Winnipeg. Myer had a knowledge of the languages and customs of the 1st nations people and respectful and trusting relationships with them. His daughter in law Freda was a wonderful addition to the Frankel family. She lovingly cared for her family in Toronto and maintained warm and caring relationships with her family in Manitoba and Ontario. She enjoyed hosting her visiting family from Manitoba and treasured her connection with her Daiter family- returning to Manitoba with her husband Robert to celebrate both her and her sister and brother in law Gertie and Louis Lazar's 50th wedding anniversary.
