RITES FOR MRS. OPPENHEIMER HELD SUNDAY
Mrs. Freda Oppenheimer, 79, widow of Simon Oppenheimer and a resident of Chariton for 59 years, passed away at an early hour Friday morning at the home of her son, Jerome S. Oppenheimer, 630 South Eighth street.
She had been in ill health since her return last year from California, where she and her sister had spent a few years, but had been bedfast but a few weeks when death came.
Freda Simon was born in Altleiningen, Germany, on October 9, 1864. When about eighteen years of age she came to Iowa to the home of her cousin, Max Loeb, in Albia, where she spent some time.
She was married in Albia on Aug. 25, 1883, to Simon Oppenheimer. After about a years residence in Red Oak, where he was engaged in the mercantile business, they came to Chariton where he established the Oppenheimer clothing store, now operated by their son, Jerome S. Oppenheimer. The death of Simon Oppenheimer occurred on Jan. 10, 1930.
During her long residence here, Mrs. Oppenheimer took an active part in community affairs. She was a member of the Chariton Women's club for many years and was also affiliated with the P.E.O. and Eastern Star organizations.
One son, Jerome, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Oppenheimer, and they also raised a niece, Miss Josie Berman, now Mrs. Fred Wolffs, of Chicago, Ill.
Besides her son, Jerome Oppenheimer and wife, and one granddaughter, Jerry Oppenheimer, of this city, Mrs. Oppenheimer is survived by one sister, Mrs. Sadie Oppenheimer, now with her daughter, Mrs. Rhea Brann, in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
Funeral services, conducted by Rabbi Eugene Mannheimer, of Des Moines, were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the Beardsley funeral home, and burial was in the Chariton cemetery by the side of her husband.
