About Frederic James Oates
From http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/06/10/after-black-rock "After Black Rock" by Joyce Carol Oates
Sometime in 1935 or 1936, when my mother was eighteen or nineteen, and working part time as a waitress at a restaurant on the Millersport Highway, she met my father, Frederic Oates. Fred was three years older than her, born in Lockport, a small city seven miles north of Millersport, on the Erie Canal. He, too, had quit school young, and had found work in a machine shop in Lockport. His early life had also been shaped by a premature and violent death, the death of his maternal grandfather, a German Jewish immigrant who had tried to murder his wife and his fourteen-year-old daughter with a shotgun but ended up killing only himself.
