ID: I223 Name: Frederick Smith Given Name: Frederick Surname: Smith Sex: M Birth: 19 Sep 1727 in , New Castle, Delaware Christening: 24 Sep 1727 Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, New Castle, DE Death: Bef Mar 1806 in , Montgomery, Virginia Note: UNPUBLISHED FAMILY HISTORY MSS:  Tuttle, Dorothy G.; 344 Saunders St.; Murray, UT 84107; SMIDT/SMITT/SMITH/SMYTH FAMILY OF NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE AND WASHINGTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA; p. 5-7.

"4.  FREDRIC (FREDERICK) SMIDT/SMITH born 19 Sep 1727 and chr. 24 Drp 1727 in Old Swedes Church (Pg 302).  Parents:  Hans Smith & Maria.  His sponsors were:  Mathias Peterson; Anders Loinan and wife Brita Samuel Petersson's wife Kerstin. (pg 36 Vol 3 Delaware Genealogical Society Journal)  Mathias & Samuel Peterson hav been identified as cousins who were sons of Matthias Peterson & Elizabeth Justis.     "In about 1755 Frederick married Margaret Paulson probably in Old Swedes Church.  For some reason many of the marriages were not recorded by the priest during the years 1744-1755 as brought out in the Communicant Records of Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church which were transcribed and edited by Courtland B. and Ruth L. Springer--Offprint from Delaware History March 1955. Margaret was born about 1729 probably in New Castle Co. to Benjamin & Mary Paulson (Will of father dated 20 June 1770 with witnesses David Robinson, Swithen Pollson & Frederick Smith-Botetourt Co. Wills pg 1-Annals of Southwest Virginia pg 584). In 1738 a Benjamin Paulson contirbuted to Old Swedes Church (Communicant Records:  Holy Trintiy Church)     "Frederick might have accompanied his brother Tobias to Augusta Co, VA as on 14 Apr 1752 he and Tobias were witnesses when James Cole of Lunenburg Co, VA sold to George Robinson 400 acres in Augusta Co. and proved by Fred. Smith, 1766. (Pgs 304, 305 Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA by Chalkley)     "Frederick must have gone back to New Castle Co, as three of his children were born there according to records of Old Swedes Chruch. He was a member of militia in Augusta Co, VA, which was raised to protect the frontier. These troops served in expeditions on both the James and New Rivers. He was a private in this militia during the year 1764 and listed as Fred. Smith.  Among other members of this company were Samuel Robinson, Wm. Robinson, Thomas Robinson, Donald McDonald, James Robinson & Benjamin Paulson (pgs 334-5 Early Adventurers on the Western Waters Vol 1 by Kegley & pg 289 Kegley's Virginia Frontier)     "Frederick Smith had a survey made on 2 Jun 1767 for 97 acres on Roanoke, beginning on top of a mountain in Augusta Co, VA. (Pg 618 Kegley's Virginia Frontier)     "This interesting bit of information was on page 618 Kegley's Virginia Frontier:  Francis Cypers and the McDonalds at the head of North Fork purchased their lands from James Patton as representatives of the old James River and Roanoke Company, or by purchase from individuals and entry of new land. Cyphers took possession of his land (400 acres) in 1753 and lived on it about forty years before a title was received.  In the meantime (1766) he sold the land to Benj. Paulson and Frederick Smith who divided it by an accepted line. The heirs of Frederick Smith:  Robert Smith, Sayers Smith, Joseph McDonald, William Sayers and Catherine Patterson sold their shares to Silas Davis, who sold to Frederick McDonald, who sold to George McDonald, who included it with his home place and McCormack land in his inclusive survey of 415. The mill dates from an order of court in 1794, the rock barn from the same period.     "Frederick was on the list of Tithables of Botetourt County, VA in 1770 with 4 horses, 12 cattle.  He appears on the Tithable List for 1772 also. Botetourt Co. was created from Augusta Co. in 1769.  (Pg 590 Kegley's Virginia Frontier)     "Through the summer of 1780 there was some Tory sentiment in all the frontier counties, partly among the natives and partly in groups of disaffected citizens from other parts of the state.  Col. Preston was instrumental in capturing and punishing some of the citiens of Botetourt and Montogmery Counties, and referred to the Governor the question of the sale of their effects. Among those held for trial were our good neighbors, Col. William Ingles, John and Joseph McDonald, William; Robert King, Frederick Smith and Robert McGee. (Pg 654 Kegley's Virginia Frontier). Following the confessions, Montogmery & Botetourt Counties proceeded to bring these persons to trial for misbehavior and treason against the state. The action taken by the ocurt varied from posting bond to going to "gaol" in Augusta to enlisting in the Continental Armny, to receiving thirty-nine lashes. William Grant volunteered to enlist for 18 months, Adam Sevier, a youth, offered to enlist, Jacob & John Shull offered to enlist until Dec. 1781. Frederic Smith the same, and took oath as a soldier. (Pgs 144 & 145 Early Adventureres onthe Western Waters Vol 1 by Kegley)     "Frederick appears on the Tax list for Botetourt for 1785 for 200 Acres of land.     "He & Zachariah Stanley had their land surveyed 7 Jul 1786 for 200 Acres of land by virtue of an entry made in the surveyors office of Botetourt on a land office treasury warrant No. 16060 for 3000 acres (the land by a division of said county is now annexed to the county of Montgomery lying on the waters of andon the North side of the North fork of Roanoke and bounded as follows. Beginning at two chestnuts...corner of George McDonalds inclusive survey ... survey dated 18 Dec 1797 & recorded 19 Feb 1801. (Virginia State Land Office Survey upon which grant issued Bk 44 pg 312)     "On 1 Oct 1793 Frederick Smith was appointed overseer of the road in Montogmery County, VA.  (pg 841 Annals of Southwest Virginia)     "He was fined on 6 Apr 1796 for not serving on a grand jury in Montomery Co, Va. (pg 862 Annals of Southwest Virginia)     "Frederick died in 1806 and his will was probated in March listing his wife Margaret, Children:  Sawers, Nancy & others whoe names were not given but inluded a granddaughter Elizabeth McDonald dau of John McDonald. (Joseph on Marr. Reg for Botetourt Co) Appraisal of his estate was made Jan 1821. (Pg 54-A Brief of Wills & Marriages in Montgomery & Fincastle C. by Anne Lowry Worrell)     "Frederick's wife, Margaret's will was probated in May 1811 and names children:  Robert, Sawyers, Catherine Patterson, Nancy McDonald, Sarah Sawyers and granddaughter Margaret Patterson. (Pg 54 A Brief of Wills & Marriages in Montogmery & Fincastle Cos. by Anne Lowry Worrell)     "In 1811 the heirs of Frederick Smith, Robert Smith, Sayers Smith, Joseph McDonald for William Sayers, and Catherine Patterson sell to Silas Davis 255 acres on north side North Fork, corner to Zachary Stanley, Frederick Smith's survey, John Coons, the "Nob Survey" and George McDonald's inclusive survey.
