<p>He was the second of nine children of his father's first marriage. A further eight children were born in the second marriage.</p><p>Frederic James Utting arrived in New Zealand on the 17 May 1860, on the "Red Jacket" from London, together with the four surviving sons of his first marriage. Edith stayed back to help look after the children of the second marriage.</p><p>Ann, Edith and the five young children arrived in New Zealand on the 8 December 1863 on the ship "Bombay", after which the settlement of Bombay was named. Several of Frederic's brothers and sisters also came to New Zealand.</p>On arriving in New Zealand, Frederic James initially worked in Auckland but soon shifted up to Port Albert where he not only worked as a surveyor but also owned and farmed 120 acres. His orchard of about 4 acres contained 120 varieties of apples, 60 varieties of pears, 55 varieties of plums, 40 varieties of peaches and 30 varieties of grapes.

<p>Some time after European colonisation of the Auckland Isthmus began, the area of New Lynn was surveyed by Frederick Utting in 1863, who named it after <a title="King's Lynn" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_Lynn">King's Lynn</a> in Norfolk because of a similarity in the countryside.<sup id="cite_ref-2004Plan_4-0" class="reference"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Lynn#cite_note-2004Plan-4">[4]</a></sup></p>;"> (James, Thomas, Charles, James, Henry, Henry, John) was born on 13 Mar 1814 in Brooke, Norfolk, England.
