About Frederick Ambrose Morris

AMBROSE MORRIS was born in about 1796. Most probably the son of James & Mary Milisent Morris, he was baptised on 25 December 1796. He became a tailor. On 17 April 1826 he married MARY STRATTON, in Chippenham and by 1828 the family had moved to the nearby town of Christian Malford.

The 1841 census finds Ambrose & Mary living "near the Turnpike" with their children, Edward 15, Alfred 14 (Ambrose) Frederic 13, Sophia 11, Amelia 9, Julia 7, Simeon 5, James 3, and Mary 3 months. Also with the family was Jacob SKUSE, an apprentice tailor, Sarah HAYNES, a female servant and Josiah DAVIS a journeyman tailor.
By 1851 many of the MORRIS children had married and left Christian Malford. The census now lists Ambrose as a master tailor with 2 apprentices. The children still living at home are Sophia 20, Amelia 18, Julia 16, Simeon 14 and Mary 10. 12 year old James is shown as boarding with Hannah BISHOP, a widow. The eldest son Edward Stratton Morris had emigrated to Australia in 1852, going to Tasmania in 1854 with his family where Little Emily died. Alfred Morris emigrated to South Africa, where he was ordained, after teaching for a while and with his faithful wife Elizabeth they had a large family and devoted themselves to the Parish of St Jude in Oudtshoorn, Cape. Elizabeth Elliott Morris was an indomitable wife & mother, despite being disabled. Sophia stayed in England & ran a Dame school in Wiltshire. Julia married twice, and had several sons & daughters. She was a trained teacher. James Ambrose Morris was a School-master, living on the High Street in Freshford, where its shop was first occupied by a butcher called Russell, and then by a Grocer cum Postmaster. He was also the organist at St Peter's in Freshford.
