About Frederick Barnaby
Came to NZ on SS Cartvale from London 25 June 1874 and arrived in Wellington 11 October 1874. Cartvale carried 418 assisted emigrants and this was the largest number of emigrants sent at that time to NZ on one ship. There was whooping cough on the ship and they spent time in quarantine on Somes Island. Fred was 18 years old.
Sister Rebecca Button also came to NZ, SS Collingwood, 1875, with husband Alfred Button. They also spent time on Somes Island for quarantine for scarlet fever, Rebecca had a baby born on Somes Island and her husband jumped off the ship as suicide in NZ water because he thought his family had died, but they didnt. Rebecca entered NZ as a widow.
Married Sophia Harris on 19 October 1899 aged 43 years, 25 years after arriving in NZ.
