About Frederick William Buerckner

An account from "Morwell Advertiser" of Friday 27 November 1903, describes the theft of cattle owned by Frederick William Buerckner (skin dealer):

"DANDENONG. At the Dandenong Police Court on Tuesday, before Mr Cresswell, P.M., Colonel Hutton and Mr Alexander T. McLean, J.P., a middle-aged man named Peter Stewart, of Kyabram, was charged with on or about May 2, 1903, stealing one red and white heifer, branded with a triangle on near rump, the property of Frederick William Buerckner skin dealer, of Yarrawonga. During the late drought, in May of last year. Mr Buerckner sent 142 head of mixed cattle by train to pasture with Mr R. Laver, at Fish Creek, Gippsland. About January 27th last the owner made an agreement with accused to drive the cattle back to Yarrawonga. Mr Buerckner went to Fish Creek, and handed over 79 of the cattle to accused. The latter was some five months on the road, and arrived at Yarrawonga with only 58 head, being 21 short. Accused stated that the missing cattle had died on the road, while others had got lost. Evidence was given to show that accused had sold five head to Albert C. Crook, of Dandenong, one at Ferntree Gully, and others along the line of route. Mr T. P. Nolan, who appeared for accused, reserved his defenee, and accused was committed for trial at Melbourne on December 1, bail being allowed in one surety."
