The Will of Frederick Cox:

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Frederick Cox of Cumberland County and Parish of Southam am weak in Body but of Sound and Perfect Memory Praised be God for the same do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form as followth that is to say first & principally I recommend my Soul to the Almighty God that gave it me and my body to the Earth to be Buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named I will that all my Debts and Funeral Charges be paid & discharged Item I give to my son William Cox Two Cows & two Calf's and one Gun that that was my Grandfathers and one Silver Spoon Item I give to my son Edward Cox that part of my Land on the upper side of Mohawk Creek to wit beginning at the Mouth of the Persimon Branch thence up the creek to a Maple at the old Ford thence along the Ridge the marked Trees to my Son Williams's line (but his mother to have that part of the Plantation that is cleared and liberty to Clear if she wants to Clearing joining to it During her Natural life) To have and to hold to him and his Heirs forever Item I give to my Son John Cox the plantation whereon I now live (only my loving Wife Elizabeth To have & to hold occupy enjoy and Possess the same & every part and parcel of the ground now cleared House out Houses orchards Fences and Privilege to Clear more if she thinks fit during his Natural Life and then to return to my son John his part on this side the Creek and to my Son Edward on the other side of the that is after their Mothers Decease) To have and to hold to him and his Heirs forever Item I give all the Residue of my Goods and chattels so my loving Wife Elizabeth to give and dispose of as she thinks fit between my five Daughters that is Mary Elizabeth Phebe Jane and Fanny or any of them that pleaseth her best to give and dispose as she thinks fit I give my Negro Boy Jack & my Son John when he is at full age or after his Mothers Decease Philis and Sarah I lend to my loving Wife during her Natural Life she and their increase to be equally divided between my five Daughters my son John Cox I would have go to school for the space of three whole Years and then I will that my son William have him till he arrive at full age to learn the art of Mastery of Mill Wright or Carpenter Trade I will that my loving Wife Elizabeth with my son William Cox be Executive and her Executor of this my last Will & Testament. In Witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this fourth day of May 1754

Signed Sealed Published & Fredrick Cox (SS) Declared in Presence of us Anthony Morgan Harry H Bagby Susannah Bagby John Epperson Wm Walton Isae Hughes At a Court held for Cumberland County the 27th Day of January 1755 This last Will and Testament of Fredrick Cox dec'd was presented or Court by Elizabeth Cox Executrix Therein named and proved by Henry Bagby Isaac Hughes and John Epperson three of the Witnefses thereto and by the Court Ordered to be Recorded and on the motion of the Said Executive who made Oath according to Lan. Certificate was granted her for obtaining a Probate thereof in due From giving Security whereupon she together with William Cox her security entered into and acknowledge their Bond according to Son reserving Liberty to William Cox the Executor therein named to take Probate thereof any time hereafter Teste Thompson Swann CCC Note: Frederick was spelled with two "e's" and signed with one.
