About Frederick William Hook
The death of Frederick by suicide was reported in the Evening Post of 28 Jan 1902 ( Papers Past ) and described the events prior when he had been sitting up all night with a sick child and when he left home around 5am, took a gun with him. Subsequently, a search party found him with the gun lying alongside with one barrel discharged. The verdict of the jury at the Coroners Inquest said that he was melancholy & distracted. At the time he had given up work due to ill health and was very concerned for his families future. The loss of his daughter, Hazel Doris as a 4 yr old in 1897 had upset him deeply and it all became too much for him. He left a widow, Janet and 6 children.
