About Frederick Morris Spurdle

Councillor Frederick Morris Spurdle, J.P., was born in New Zealand, his parents being among the pioneer colonists who arrived in the early forties. In 1867 Mr. Spurdle came to Wanganui, and has resided in the district ever since, with the exception of about eighteen months spent in the Fiji Islands. He was first elected to a seat in the council of Wanganui in 1879, and since that date has been out of municipal harness only some two or three years. For the two years (1884–6) Mr. Spurdle filled the office of mayor, and as chief magistrate of the borough did a great deal of useful work. As a member of the Harbour Board, too, Councillor Spurdle further added to his popularity. For six years he served the district as chairman of the Licensing Committee, and held a similar honourable position in the local school committee and the Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the directorate of the Public Library and Museum. Councillor Spurdle takes an active interest in aquatic and other sports, and has for many years held the position of President to the Union Boat Club. For a considerable time, also he was an officer in the Wanganui Fire Brigade. As general manager of the Wanganui Sash and Door Factory and Timber Company, Limited, councillor Spurdle occupies one of the most important positions in the town.
