About Fredrick William Simmons Renner

Master Mariner. Master of several China traders, notably "Strathfieldsaye" and "Faraway." Emigrated to Nelson, New Zealand with wife and two sons in 555 ton "Queen Margaret" arriving October 18, 1855 after a passage of 116 days from London. Was Master of numerous steamers on New Zealand coast until 1876. On February 7, 1864, while Master of the Wonga Wonga (76 tons) saved 60 of 72 survivors of H.M.S. Orpheus wrecked on Manukau Bar, our of a crew of 250. Purchased the schooner "Hannah Barratt" in Sydney in 1876, and worked the N.Z. coast until 1883. Rescued Captain Jas. Stevens, sole survivor of schooner "William and Mary," capsized and bottom up near Xapiti Island. Lost at sea with all hands (7 or 8 all told) in "Hannah Barratt" in Cook Strait, New Zealand April 2, 1883, believed to have capsized near Terawhiti. See
