About G. Velu Achari, Bhagavathy Vilakam

G. Velu Achari and his brothers received training in ivory carving and carpentry from the elders of the family including Neelakandan Achari of Putten Veedu and Ramakrishnan Achari of Pazhaya Veedu. He was particularly good in carving ‘Dasavatharam’ figures. However, his generation was reluctant to follow the craft. Ivory carving was a lucrative craft, but it demanded a lot of physical strain and was time consuming. English education gave them new job opportunities. Many male family members got government employment as draughtsman in Survey office, as drawing teachers etc. These jobs promised them a regular salary.

Later, Velu Achari worked in University College as an artist (Zoology Dept, under Bhaskaran Nair); he married Ramalekshmi Ammal (Chellammal) of Pillavilakathu Veedu.

According to Sharada (Putten Veedu), Ramakrishnan Achari wanted to give his eldest daughter's hand in marriage to C.P. Achari. Once when someone asked him whether he is willing to give his girl to Velu, who was the artist's nephew, he relied "Pulayanu koduthalum Veluvinu kodukkilla". However, Govindan Achari, the 'valiya mandravathi' intervened and finally Ramakrishnan Achari changed his mind. Sharada who sat beside the bride on the marriage day still remember that Ramlakshmi was crying throughout the ceremonies.

The newly wedded couples settled near Pazhaya Veedu. during those days Velu gave money to young Sharada, asking her to hand it over to his wife, so that she could buy things from the vendors. However, Ramalakshmi Ammal used to scold Sharada, asking her why she didn't throw the money on his face. Soon the couple parted ways and Ramalakshmi took care that Velu would never see his child Ambika. In his death bed, when Velu asked for Ramalakshmi and his daughter, they did not go!
