About Gabriel Laurent Bordelon

The first Bordelon in Louisiana was born in Le Havre, France on 2 5 October 1696 and baptized the next day at the Church of Notre Dame, Le Havre, France. Lau rent, as he was called in Louisiana, was the son of Jean Baptiste Thomas Bordelon and Magdele ine de Brachon. Jean Baptiste was "controlleur de vivres de la marine" at the porte of Le Hav re. This term "de vivres" refers to supply, subsistence, and commissary functions of the Navy . By 1711 JEAN BAPTISTE BORDELON was employed at the port of Rochefort, France as "directeu r des vivres de la marine" of that port. From letters of the court the 1711 to 1712 in the Ar chives of the Port of Rochefort, it appears that Bordelon had left his wife at Le Havre. I n 1719 Dame Magdeleine de Richouf, wife of Jean Baptiste Thomas Bordelon, successfully sued h er husband for separation of the assets of their community. LAURENT BORDELON, son of Jean B aptiste Bordelon, was married at Saint Louis Parish, New Orleans, Louisiana on 20 February 17 30 to Anne Francoise Roland. In the record of this marriage, Laurent is described as an emplo yee of the company. He names his parents as Jean Baptiste Bordelon and Henriette Rochechouart . It is possible that his father was married for a third time, and Henriette was the step-mot her of Laurent. Anne Francoise Roland was a native of Saint Germain l'Aurerois Parish, Pari s, France. In the marriage record she names her parents as Jean Baptiste Roland and Jeanne Bo nnet. Anne Francoise Roland came to Louisiana in 1719. She is named on the passenger list o f the vessel "Mutine". At the time of her marriage to Laurent Bordelon, Anne was the wido w of Nicolas Sarrazin and the mother of three sons: Michel Sarrazin, who died at Pointe Coupe e on 20 July 1746 at the age of eighteen; Antoine Sarrazin who later married Marie Coulon o n 26 June 1747 at Pointe Coupee; and Francoise Sarrazin who was at Arkansas in 1745 and late r married there. Apparently Laurent Bordelon and his wife, Anne, went from New Orleans to N atchez Post shortly after their marriage and their first son, Nicolas, was born there in lat e 1730. The second child, Antoine, was born in New Orleans in 1733, indicating a return to Ne w Orleans by the family. LAURENT BORDELON died prior to February 1737. The records of his b urial is not available. However, his widow, Anne Francoise Roland, married (her 3rd) Jean Ste phan, called Roquancourt, a native of Basse Bretagne, France, at Pointe Coupee on February 17 37. Of this third marriage of Anne were born two daughters, Anne Stephan (born 1 October 17 38) and Petronille Stephan (born 9 May 1742), both at Pointe Coupee. The two Bordelon brother s, Nicolas and Antoine, ages 15 and 12, were shown in the household of their step-father an d mother in the Pointe Coupee census of 1745. Anne Francoise Roland died at Pointe Coupee o n 8 January 1758. He was known as Laurent in Louisiana. This BORDELON family was the firs t of the BORDELON's in Louisiana.
