About Gadi Strickland

Gadi Strickland was born c. 1778 in North Carolina to unknown parents.

Name

Gadi's name appears in some on-line trees as "William Gideon Strickland." This appears to be a confusion between Gadi and another man who lived in another region of North Carolina (Edgecombe County) around roughly the same time.

Many trees have assumed that "Gadi" must be short for another name, which is probably how he was conflated with a "Gideon." In reality, the name Gadi is a Biblical name that Strickland specialist Mary Exley found was frequently used in Robeson County, North Carolina, where Gadi lived and was quite likely born.

Origins

The oldest record available for Gadi is the 1810 U.S. Federal Census for Robeson County, North Carolina. His parents, exact date or place of birth, and other early biographical details have not survived. An analysis by the Strickland Surname Genealogy Research Group, using both their own DNA samples and those of the Strickland DNA Project, found that he was a descendant of Matthew Strickland, Sr. of Isle of White, Virginia, possibly through son Matthew Strickland, Jr.

Some Geni users have contended that Gadi was Native American and of the Q haplogroup. This contradicts the findings of the Strickland DNA Project, which finds his descendants to be of the European M haplogroup, with ancestry back to England. Surviving records support the Strickland DNA Project's findings, particularly since he appears on censuses and other records as white and also served on multiple juries in Tattnall County.

Adult Life

Gadi married Elizabeth Burnside by 1806. They had the following children (list possibly incomplete):

  1. Mary Strickland, b. c. 1806 in South Carolina; m. (1) Kadar Keaton and (2) Dempsey Griffin
  2. William Gadi Strickland, b. 1812 probably in North Carolina; m. Miriam Kennedy
  3. Thomas Strickland, b. 1814 probably in Georgia; m. Winneasy Holman [sp?]

He served in the Robeson County militia during the War of 1812. By 1820, he had moved to Tattnall County, Georgia, where most of the surviving records of his adult life are found.

Gadi and Elizabeth were divorced in 1840 in Tattnall County, Georgia.

He re-married to Mary Jane (Hughes) Wilkes, likely in 1842, after which he moved to Bryan County, Georgia, where his son William Gadi lived. Mary's daughter from her first marriage was Lucy Ann Wilkes b. c. 1834 in Georgia; she took her step-father's surname by 1850 and became Lucy Ann Strickland.

Gadi died 6 March 1854 in Bryan County. He is buried at Strickland Cemetery #30 in Fort Stewart, Liberty County, Georgia, which is on the homestead of son William Gadi.
