Gavin Hogg Dortch was born 1879 in Raleigh, Wake Co, the 2nd of 8 known children (3 boys/5 girls) born to Isaac Foote Dortch and Lucy Hogg, who later moved the family to Goldsboro, Wayne Co, NC, where his father was a prominent attorney. He is the paternal grandson of William Theophilus Dortch of Nash Co and Mary Elizabeth Pittman of Wayne Co., who served in the state legislature. His maternal grandparents were Dr. Thomas Devereux Hogg and Janet Bryan.

Gavin was raised in Goldsboro, and later moved to Raleigh where in worked in Insurance. He married Margaret Turk about 1905, daughter of William A. Turk & Mary Wills Mordicai (daughter of Henry Lane Mordecai & Martha Ann Hinton). They would become parents of 2 known children: William Turk Dortch (1906-1934) and Gavin Hogg Dortch (1908-1985).

Gavin died in 1943, at age 63. His wife survived him by 9 years, passing in 1972 at age 88. Their unmarried son, William Turk Dortch, who preceded him in death, is buried with them. The family is buried in the Mordecai plot.
