Gavin Semple was born on 26 June 1854 in Stonehouse, Lanark County, Scotland, son of Peter Semple (1822-1904) and Janet (Torrance) Semple (1825-1896).

He is brother of John Semple (1846-1914); Janet (Semple) Stevenson (1848-1911); Margaret (Semple) Muir (1849-1920); Mary Semple (1852-?); Jean "Jane" Semple (1856-1903); Agnes (Semple) Hunter (1858-1925); Christina Semple (1860-1912); Helen Semple (1863-?); Elizabeth (Semple) Smith (1864-1948) and Ellen (Semple) Thomson (1867-1932).

On 25 June 1885, Gavin Semple, age 30, married Elizabeth Hamilton, age 27, at Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. In 1891, their residence was in Ayrshire, Scotland. They became the parents of Jessie Torrance (Semple) Earl; Bethia Hamilton (Semple) Hamilton; Margaret (Semple) McGarvey; Jane Semple; Peter Semple; and Christina (Semple) Tennant.

On 1 October 1916, Gavin Semple, age 62, died in Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland. His name was added to a Memorial erected by his daughter, Jessie T. Semple Earl, in the Stonehouse Cemetery, Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The inscription included, "...My father Gavin Semple; who died at Swinhill, 1st Oct 1916, aged 60 years..." (a).
