About Gen. David Blackshear

A Patriot of the American Revolution for North Carolina with the rank of Private. DAR Ancestor # A010767

David Blackshear was born on January 31, 1764 in Craven County, later Jones County, North Carolina. The third of eight children of James and Catherine Franck Blackshear, young David was reared in a home, seven miles above Newton on the banks of Chinquapin Creek near Trenton.

General David Blackshear settled in Laurens County, Georgia, in 1790. He married Miss Fannie Hamilton of Hancock County, Georgia and raised a family of seven sons. After his death, his large land holdings were divided between his seven sons. One son, David Blackshear, Jr., sold his share of the land to his brothers and moved to Greenwood, Florida. David Blackshear, Jr. married Susan Bryan and acquired land in Jackson County. Another brother, Edward Jefferson Blackshear, visited his brother in Greenwood, Florida and met Mary Jane Pittman. Mary Jane Pittman was the daughter of Col. James J. and Martha Whitehead Pittman of Marianna, Florida.
