About Gena-Gitel Ovsei

Based on birth records it looks as if Gena-Gitel and Iosel had at least two daughters.

Josel would have been about 43 and 46 when the daughters were born. If Sora died, it was probably incumbent upon him to remarry, especially as some of his other children were still quite young.

Gena-Gitel herself may have been a youngish widow.

The birth records of her daughters show her 'maiden name' as KUZNETS daugter of Movsha

There are other records which show Gena Gitel Ovsey (Turner's Wife - Iosel was a Turner by trade) daughter of Movsha giving money to Vikhna Ovsey (daughter of Iosel) on at least 3 occasions. On these records Gena Gitel's maiden name was shown as SHMIDT.

As some of these translated records are not always clear, it is likely that Gena Gitel had been previously married. Either KUZNETS or SHMIDT could have been her maiden name or that of her first husband.

Gena Gitel would have been Vikhna's step-mother. On the 3 recorded occasions when Gena Gitel sent her money in April 1899, Sept 1903 & Apr 1906, it could have been on behalf of Iosel, for Vikhna helping to look after Iosel & Gena Gitel's young children. Vikhna was married in 1903.

Either Iosel and/or Gena Gitel could have been having health problems. Maybe Gena Gitel had to look after him. This is all speculation.
