About Genaro Madrigal
Genaro was born in 1877 in Cerralvo, N.L.,Mexico. He came to Roma,Tx as a young adolescent and became a very prominent citizen of the town. He worked for many years at the Manuel Guerra Store where he learn many business practices that later would help him build his fortune. Genaro married Leocadia, a member of one of Roma's pioneer families,in1890.The couple lived their lives and reared their only daugther in a residence he bought from one of his wife's relatives.He set up his main place of business in the first floor
of the building located on the town's plaza across from the catholic church.The business consisted of furniture and lumber and hardware.He also engaged in real estate.When his wife came into some of her inheritance upon her mother's death, Genaro engaged himself in farming and ranching.Upon the death of his father-in law he picked up the family's farming and ranching operations in present day Brooks County. Meanwhile,he invested and deposited in banks in Rio Grande,Laredo,and San Antonio, and bought stock in the Roma Water System and Roma International Bridge.By the time of death in 1933,Genaro had expaned his business with stores in Zapata,Tx and San Pedro de Roma, Tamps (now MIguel Aleman) and rental real estate in those cities and Rio Grande City.Genaro often made business and pleasure travel to Monterrey, Mexico City, San Antonio,Corpus,and South Texas border cities where he was known as a smart and honest business person and one of the important men in Starr County.
