Shot by one of his own men during a dark and cloudy moonless evening at Koedoesrand during the Battle of Paardeberg.

Only two shots were fired that night. The first shot caused some of the men to go and inspect the incident, and the second shot that rang out was the sound of a Mauser bullet, fired by a sleeping and startled picket, that hit their commander in the stomach.

He was carried to his tent and died several minutes later. His last words were " a thousand bullets flew over my head, and now I have to die, shot by one of my own men".

He ordered his men not to reveal the name of the sentry who fired the shot because he feared that the man had suffered enough.
