About General Henry Welles

"Senator Henry Welles was the oldest son of George and Prudence (Talcott) Welles, born in 1780 at Glastonbury, Connecticut, the family moving to Tioga Point, Pennsylvania in 1799. About 1810, Henry purchased the “Welles Farm” at Tioga Point. Through the purchase process, Welles gained knowledge of the complex nature of attempting to secure land titles for properties entangled in the “Connecticut claim,” and became one of the principals in changing the procedure to the benefit of the Commonwealth. To this end, Welles was elected to serve in the state House of Representatives, 1809, 1812-1813. From 1815-1819, he also served in the state Senate. Regarding the House, he wrote the “Academy Bill” in 1813; was appointed Aid to the Governor by Simon Snyder, receiving the rank of General. In 1812 he married Sarah Spalding, a daughter of Colonel John Spalding of Sheshequin, Pennsylvania. General Welles died at Athens, PA, December, 1833, aged 53 years."
