About George Sumner Albee

George Sumner Albee was born May 23, 1837 on his father's farm near Fillmore, N.Y. and died September 4, 1898 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He learned the trade of carpenter and joiner, taught school at Fillmore (1857-1858) and at Pike, N.Y. (1858-1859). He taught mathematics and natural history at Rushford (N.Y.) Academy and entered the University of Michigan in 1861 and graduated there with the degree B.A. in 1864. He was principal of the High School at Peoria, Illinois (1864-1865) and at Kenosha, Wisconsin (1865-1868). He was married August 16, 1866 to Asenath Philinda (Linda) Hatt in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Oshkosh Normal School began offering classes in 1871 with George S. Albee as its first president.
