A note left by Nellie (Bartley) Adkins indicated that George (her grandfather) was the son of Pleasant Bartley and Nancy Leslie Tooley. His granddaughter Mary Bartley Smith wrote an article for the Pikeville News regarding her grandparents saying: "George Washington Bartley was of rugged pioneer stock. His father, Pleasant Bartley came from North Carolina and settled in ElkHorne Valley, Kentucky. His mother Nancy Leslie (Tooley) Bartley was a member of one of Pike County's oldest and finest families. George married Pricey Potter, daughter of John Potter (1825-1885) and Betty Ramey (b. 1835) whose family settled ElkHorne City."

George Washington Bartley was a successful retail businessman, farmer, philanthropist, deputy sheriff, and, a Baptist deacon. His stores were on Ashcamp and Hellier, KY. He and Pricy, were known to feed as many as twenty people at their dinner table.

A note left by Nellie (Bartley) Adkins indicated that George (her grandfather) was the son of Pleasant Bartley and Nancy Tooley.
