About Lt. George Bell

A Patriot of the American Revolution for PENNSYLVANIA with the rank of SECOND LIEUTENANT. DAR Ancestor #: A008702

  • In 1776, volunteered in the Militia Service under Captain John Reed in NY.
  • Was with Washington at the Battle of Long Island, the Battle of White Plains and the retreat through New Jersey.
  • Was in the Battle with the Hessians at Five Miles Squaw - the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of Germantown, the Battle of White Marsh Church (where ne was shot through his fore and middle fingers on his right hand while taking ammunition from his cartridge box.)
  • Commissioned as Second Lieutenant in July 1777 - First Company, (Captain Murray) - Fourth Battalion, Lancaster County Millitia of Pennsylvania.
  • Moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Lancaster County, S.C. about 1800.

George Bell made his will in Edgecome Co VA February 18, 1755, probated in May 1755. He named son John, plantation where I now live; David, George, and Wife Sarah Bell. Executors were Wife Sarah and son John. Witnesses were Arthur Bell and George Bell.420

A listing for George Bell Jr. and wife Sarah, with children John, David, George, others, appears in the Edgecombe Co NC Vital Records, 1720-1880, a compilation of records originally derived from a book entitled “Early Families of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, Its Past and Present,” published by the Tarboro Society for Genealogy and Biography in 1881.401 The date given for the death of George Bell Jr. is 8 Nov 1751. It is stated that he “owns property on Swift Creek.”
