George was at his father's house in the Bland Hills when it was raided by the Swamp Dragons, a violent local militia group with loose ties to the Union. The Swamps chased George into the yard where they tortured and killed him. George had Confederate sympathies but was not in uniform. After his death, George's grieving father chiseled this headstone by hand. It reads: HERE+LIES+G.B.B. KILD+BY+THE+SWOMPS MAY+THE+2?+1864 AGE 33+?M 24D MURDERED I SAY
