About George E. Bieber

George E. Bieber, one of Emmaus' oldest residents died last night at the age of 91, with seven children, 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren surviving. Bieber, who lived at 742 Chestnut St., after working 42 years with the Reading Railroad, retired 21 years ago. Recently he recollected the "good old days" when eggs were eight cents a dozen, meat six cents a pound, and butter 12 cents a pound. Born in Berks county, he was a son of the late Jonas Bieber ans Anna (Eck) Bieber. His early years were spent in Long Swamp and he lived for the past 54 years in Emmaus. He retired from the railroad as a section foreman. He was married to the late Anna (Geist) Bieber who died 10 years ago. He was a member of the Mertztown Union Church and a charter member of Emmaus Fire Co. No.1. He is survived by two sons, Edwin, Emmaus and Harold, at home, as well as five daughters, Jennie, wife of M. Frank Fegley, Easton; Sarah, wife of Raymond Fegley, Emmaus; Rosa, wife of Morris Stauffer, Pottstown; Florence, wife of Harry Roth, at home; and Laura, wife of Raymond Meitzler, Emmaus. Eighteen grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren also survive.Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Mertztown Union Church.
