He was the founder of G.F Blackbeard Boot & Shoe Warehouse. No 27 Bathurst Street, Grahamstown. Circa: 1862. The same family traded on this site for more than a century and a quarter.

Francis Blackbeard was born in Middlesex, near London, on the 21 December 1816. Aged 2, Mr Blackbeard and family emigrated to South Africa in 1820. They were members of the Rowles party from London which sailed aboard the Nautilus from Deptford to Port Elizabeth. From there they were transported by ox wagon to their allotted land on the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony.
