About George Calvert

Ben M. Angel notes: As of December 2011, the parentage of George Calvert of Stafford County remained unproven, in part because of the destruction of Stafford County archives during the American Civil War. As per the Calvert Genealogy Group (published in the Prince William Reliquary, Vol. 9, No. 2):

Hopefully, someone – maybe you – will discover the missing link proving this family’s heritage. The Calvert Genealogy Group is searching for clues and we welcome any source information that will assist us in this effort. Our biggest roadblock is locating information from this time period. Stafford records were lost during the Civil War by theft and vandalism. The few scant records uncovered lead us to believe that George of Stafford is most likely the son of William. Help us find the documentation to prove it or disprove it.

-Ann Mitchell (ae-mitchell@hotmail.com), David Bell, Mary Shafer, Richard Colbert, Ric Tobin and Laree McDaniel Lee

George Calvert's marriages (to Elizabeth Doyne, Ann Notley, and Hannah Neale) likewise remained unproven at that time, as are the most likely dates of birth and death assigned by the Calvert Genealogy Group (b. c1668 in Maryland, d. bet. 1694 and 1701 in Virginia)

George Calvert was born 1668 in Maryland and moved across the river in Stafford County, Virginia.

George Calvert was in court in 1690, having filed a complaint against John Takinson due to a debt owed George, the amount of which was a large sum of money, even by today's standards (1500 pounds). The settlement was 800 pounds.

George was in court again, being sued by Robert Brent for non-delivery of goods. The court ruled in Brent's favor and the judgement against him was for 80 lbs of tobacco to William Harris--for attendence at Court in the suit between Robert Brent and George.

In 1771, Frederick Calvert, the Sixth Lord Baltimore, had died in Naples, Italy, leaving no legitimate heirs. At the time of Frederick's death the Revolution had not yet broken out, although tensions were already high and the thought of a formal break with the Crown was not yet a topic often discussed. As the eldest male, direct descendant of the original Lord Baltimore, George was next in line for the title and with it the Calvert holdings in Europe and America.

George Calvert, proprietor of Deep Hole Farm in Prince William County, Virginia, born and raised in the colonies, declined to accept the title of Seventh Lord Baltimore. By this act, the title was deemed by the Crown to have expried with Frederick. There would be no more Lords of Baltimore.

In 1781 the Governor of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson, commissioned one George Calvert, age 70, a descendant of Leonard's line and cousin to a Omer T's great-great grandfather, as a Captain in the Virginia Militia. The Governor's action is significant for a number of reasons and points up the difference that had evolved between the tltled Calvert of England and those who settled in America.
