About George Asberry Calvert

George Calvert was born in Texas in 1927 and lived on farms and ranches in both Texas and New Mexico until joining the United States Navy during World War II. He then spent some 9 years in the oil industry in California prior to moving to Grants Pass Oregon Josephine county in 1956, where he was self employed in the service station and garage business for about 9 years. After selling his business he was employed by Sheriff Dean Snider, starting as a Deputy and rising to Under-sheriff. Upon Sheriff Brandt taking office, he remained as Captain until being appointed County Commissioner to fill the position vacated by the resignation of Commissioner Joel L. Barker. George had considerable training and schooling in the field of law enforcement having taken night courses at Southern Oregon College for two years and receiving 18 college credits in Police Science and Management. He also attended the Federal Bureau of Narcotics School in Monterrey, California, and has taken numerous other courses dealing with law enforcement and management. George was on the Board of Directors of the Red Cross, the advisory Board of the Family Service Clinic, Solid Waste Committee of the Association of Oregon Counties, and represented Josephine County in the Redwood Empire Association. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Toastmasters, Josephine County Safety Council, the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, the 45th President of the Association of Oregon Counties, and was a member of the Sheriff's Posse for 4 years. George was the 1st man to serve as President of both the A.O.C and the O & C Counties Association at the same time. He also served on the N.A.O.C.. He was an active member of the Church of Christ and had become an Deacon of the congregation and was an Elder for 9 years. George retired in 1979 and previously had purchased a piece of property in the Jump off Joe Creek area. His idea came true and he turned it into a RV Park/swimming Hole with camping sites also. He named it , "Jump Off Joe Waterfall R.V. Park. George used the sale of this property to set him and his wife up for life with payments coming in once a month. His wife Patting passed in 2012 and George didn't expect himself to be living alone for so long. George faced many health issues and passed on May 5, 2016. He is survived by his three sons still living in Grants pass. As well as having 9 grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren. George enjoyed riding horses, carving leather, bowling and going out on Friday nights to the western dance. He loved to two step. George was a respected man, a sincere man, a man of honor. George taught his boys to stand up for themselves and don't ever back down if you are in the right. Even though George was missing his wife Patty he was always ready to tell a funny joke or tell a story from his past.
