About George Campbell

George Campbell 1794 – 1864

George Campbell, the first child of 12 children for Thomas and Sarah Wilcox Campbell, was born on November 8, 1794 (if I have correctly deciphered the dates on his severely weathered grave marker?)in Blount County, Tennessee and died on December 24, 1864 in the Ursa Township area of Adams County, Illinois at age 71 Yrs 1 Mos 16 Dys. He came to Adams County in the year 1823 and erected a cabin on his claim in the north east quarter of Section 31 near what would later become Walnut Corners in the Bear Creek Territory of Adams County. While in Adams County, he stayed for four days with the family of Samuel Groshong before returning to Tennessee for his stock and other supplies, Samuel Groshong and his family had settled on the north east quarter of Section 29 near Rock Creek in Adams County. When George returned to Illinois in 1824 he was joined by Samuel Groshong and his two daughters at the Trading Post near what later became Palmyra, in Marion County, Missouri, Samuel's wife had died while George was in Tennessee. George married Samuel's daughter Mary the next year on August 18, 1825, in Adams County, Illinois, their marriage License reads as follows;

August the 18, 1825

"To whom it may concern, I give you to under stand that I Samuel Groshong has nothing agins George Campbell marring mi daughter Mary Groshong"

"George Campbell and Mary Groshong were lawfully joined in Marriage by me this eighteenth day of August AD one thousand eight hundred and twenty five".

Willard Keyes, County Comm., On August 12, 1826

To this union there was a son born, who they named Andrew Jackson Campbell, he died in California in 1849. He is said to have been the 1st white child born in the Ursa Township area of Adams County, Illinois. A short time after George Campbell arrived in Adams County, his for brothers, David, Joseph, Clayborn and Russell and a sister came also. David Campbell married Sarah Worley on June 29, 1826 and Joseph and Clayborn married sisters with the surname of Nelson, their sister married Robert Beatty.

George was also a Veteran, having served in the Blackhawk War, he is buried in the New Providence Cemetery at Ursa, in Adams County, Illinois. The people of Ursa have recently placed a Memorial marker for his wife Mary Groshong Campbell, next to the grave marker for George, it reads;

Mary "Polly Groshong Campbell - May 11, 1811 - September 28, 1889 - Married, August 18, 1825 to George Campbell.

Simular Memorial markers were also placed in the nearby Denson Pioneer Cemetery in the north east corner of the village of Ursa, for her father, Samuel Groshong, George's mother Sarah Wilcox Campbell and his father, Thomas Campbell. George's father is identified as the 1st death in the Ursa Area of Adams County, Illinois, he was born on December 26, 1764 and died near Ursa circa 1825 and was buried in the south west corner of what would later become the Denson Cemetery.
