About George Chadwell

Source: "Early Settlers of VA, Lee Co.", p. 907. "The immigrant ancestor of the Chadwell family in VA". In 1749, George appears in Lunenburg Co., VA in Cornelius Cargill's List of Thithes for the Year 1749, p.117, and again in 1750. He was probably still in the part of Lunenburg Co., which became Halifax in 1752, and later Pittslyvania Co., 1766-67. In 1767 George appears in a List of Tithables taken by Peter Perkins in Pittsylvania Co., VA. (VA Historical magazine, v. 24, p. 188). In 1768 an order was given by the Colonial churches in Pittsylvania Co., VA (VA Hist. Mag., v. 22, p. 175), which mentioned church being held at times at George Chadwell's house, and listed "Camden Parish". On 4 Nov 1770, "George Chadwell of Pittsylvania Co., VA, conveyed 125 acres of land, lying in Pittsylvania Co., joining on the north side of Dan River, according to a patent granted to George Chadwell under the seal of the Colony, date 10 June 1760 in the 33rd year of the Reign of his majesty George the Second Francis Fauquier, Governor and is the land and plantation where on the said George Chadwell now dwelleth, adjoining William Beans Line, to William Harris of the Co., of Goochland and State of VA for the sum of 100 pounds. George (X) Chadwell" (Book 2, p. 36, Pittsylvania Co., VA).

George "of Pittsylvania Co., VA" sold 4 heads of cattle on 15 Feb 1775; bill of sale approved 27 March 1777. George and his wife were "Infirm of body" on 28 Nov. 1776 when they conveyed all their property to their son John in exchange for his taking care of them. (D.B. 4, p. 275, Pittsylvania Co., VA). It therefore seems clear that George and his wife died sometime thereafter in Pittsylvania Co., VA.
