About George Clapham
In his will George described Elizabeth (Lilford) as his ‘now or non wife’ and as no entry of marriage has been found they presumably never married or only married on his deathbed, although in the will he does describe Thomas Lilford as his father-in-law. George bequeathed his lands in Little Dunmow to his son Thomas and his lands in Old Sailing to his son George. His will was signed with the mark of a cross and simple seal. It was countersigned by Estor Clapham indicating a reverse '9' as a mark [the name Estor is indistinct and that is only a guess as it could be a shortform for Elizabeth or executor]
See Ancestral Clapham's section to view and print the original Will.
Will dated 26th August 1661, proved 30th October 1661 Arch. Ct. Mdx, Essx & Herts, available from the Chelmsford Records Office/Library. Early Herts Will's come under Essex duresdiction.
