About George Washington Coon
He died as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. [Confederate Calvary Officer]
Some records list George’s middle name as William, but, given Adam Coon’s propensity for naming his sons after famous people, I believe it was actually Washington.
George was a Confederate cavalry officer (Lieutenant) during the Civil War, enlisting in Peytona and died of dysentery while the cavalry was wintering over in Salem, Virginia in early 1863. Official entry reads “ Fourteenth Virginia Cavalry, Company F, Capt. James B. Morgan’s, Boone County Roster: Coon, George William, Sr. 2nd Lt, Co. F. (1st), b. Kanawha Co, circa 1823, farmer. Age 37, Peytonia PO, Boone Co. Enlisted 9-10-1862, died Salem 1-31-63. Left wife and 4 children.”
