Amanda M. Reynold's is NOT the mother of George M. Cox. Research seems to point to George being the son from John's first marriage. A number of documents have stated that he is the brother of Thomas H. and Wiley O. Cox.
St. Louis Republic June 9, 1889
"Springfield, Mo., June 8 - Dr. George M. Cox died of Bright's disease, at his home in this city, at 5 o'clock this morning aged 55 years. He was a native of Tennessee, and came to this city many years ago. During Grant's term, he was a member of the pension board at this place, and was appointed by President Cleveland to the same position from which he was removed only a few weeks ago. He was also a member of the State Board of Health. His wife and a son and daughter survive him. Dr. Cox is the man who attained notoriety a year or two ago by throwing vitriol upon Effie Ellis, a variety actress, with whom his son was infatuated."
