He was educated at Salem and in 1828 was sent to Wesleyville Mission to acquire the Xhosa language. He acted as interpreter to Capt. Allan Gardiner R.N. on the latter's visit to Digane. In 1835 he petitioned for recognition of Natal by the Government. He was appointed as the first Superintendent of Native Locations at Grahamstown in 1848. He served in the war of 1850 - 1853 as Captain of Fingo Levy.
