ROCHESTER—George Dean Martin, 75, of Rochester, died unexpectedly Saturday night, Jan. 8, 2005, at his home.
Enlarge Map He was born June 29, 1929, in Rochester, the son of George and Gertrude (Elwood) Martin, and graduated from Rochester High School in 1947.
He married Mary Ann Miner Jan. 17, 1953, in Brandon and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
A lifelong Rochester resident and dairy farmer, he operated Martin Farms with his brothers. He had also worked for the Vermont Dept. of Education Industrial Homework Division. He enjoyed hunting, and served on the Rochester School Board and Selectboard for many years. He was a member of the Rochester Masonic Lodge.
After retiring, he and Larry Curtis were instrumental in restoring and reviving the Rochester village center, including the store, the café building, and the Merriam House.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann of Rochester; two sons, George D. Martin Jr. of Charlotte and Dr. William Martin of Rye, N.Y.; a daughter, Nancy Martin of New York, N.Y.; a sister, Patricia Lary of Rochester; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Carl and Elwood, and by one granddaughter.
Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester. There are no calling hours.
