About George Došen
ACCIDENT NO. 7 – January 16th, A. D. 1906, Red Jacket Shaft, George Dosen.
George Dosen, trammer, was killed at the 62nd level south of No. 4 by a fall of vein rock.
An inquest held before Coroner Fisher.
John Strolle, a witness, testified as follows: "I work for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, at the Red Jacket Shaft, as boss of a timber-gang, I was working there today at the 62nd level at the time of the accident. I examined the ground there this morning and found it all solid. I could see nothing wrong whatsoever. To be on the safe side we put up a big piece of timber a foot through against the ground there. Dosen was a trammer. About twenty minutes to four P. M. the accident happened. A piece of vein rock fell away from the back. It was a cutting out where the accident happened.”
William Berryman testified as follows: “I am employed as a miner at the Red Jacket shaft. I was working there today at the 62nd level south of No. 4 Calumet. I know the deceased by sight. He was a trammer. I was there when the accident happened. About twenty minutes to four o'clock. I did not see the rock fall, although I was close by, I had my back towards it. The rock fell about 16 feet. The ground was thoroughly examined this morning. I have worked with John Strolle and he is a very careful man. There was a prop up against the piece of ground. I was working about twenty feet ahead with the machine. This was in the back of the stope."
Verdict of the Jury: “We, the jury, upon our oaths do say, that the said George Dosen came to his death on the 16th day of January 1906, at the 62nd level south of No. 4 shaft, Red Jacket shaft of the Calumet and Hecla Mine, by an accidental fall of vein rock."
