About George Downing

George's wife's name has not been found in my research. His Death-date listed above precedes the birth of his children listed below. Something is amiss in this chain. (LM)

Per Emmet Starr's "History of the Cherokee Indians," 1921, George was the oldest son of Major Downing but the order of siblings is unconfirmed. In findagrave.com, memorial #26803328 (Maj John B Downing), Darlene Johnson had years of birth for the four siblings making George the second oldest.

The following was taken from the familytreemaker.com entry on George Downing: Occupation: Trader from Pine Log. Letters of Benjamin Hawkins, 1796-1806, Collections of the Georgia Historical Society, Vol IX, pg. 15, November 24, 1797: "I this day sat out from General Pickens's, to the Ocunna station, after having been fitted out with whatever was necessary by the most friendly hospitality of the General and his lady. I crossed the Theowee near his house and travelled W.N.W. up the river and through an uneven broken country 11 miles to Cane Creek. Here I met with George Downing, a trader from Pine Log, and Notetsenchansaie with his brothers, halfbreeds; they have uniformly supported a fair character. He [George Downing] sent his nephew, Tom Petit, a decent, orderly young man with me to Ocunna to provide a pilot and interpreter for me..." [Note: George's sister Nannie married a Petit and her son was Thomas, thus, Tom was George's nephew as mentioned here.}

George's children are : 1) ALEXANDER, b. about 1790; [who married Oo-go-yo-sti and had children: Lethe, Annie, Charles, Skudders and John];

2) JOHN, b. about 1794 and d. after 1851 (This is the John who is constantly confused with his Grandfather, Maj. John Downing and who is my direct line. L.M.) [he married Leah Lovelady and had one child Martha Jane Downing];

3) JAMES, b. about 1796 [whose wife's name isn't mentioned but whose children are George and PeachEater Downing]; and,

4) ELIZABETH, b. about 1800 [who married Stephen Whitmire.]
