George Essen is the son of Jacob Essen & anna Stenick. George was born in Strasbourg, Alsac- Lorraine ( French Territory) 1st marriage to Katherine Rush she died in 1882. George then married Addie Canfield the daughter of George Canfield and Margaret Mary clink
Obituary in the Times Republican 3-15- 1916:
George Essen, for several years a farmer of the Rock Valley neighborhood and for 2 years past a resident of the city , died 3:30 Tuesday afternoon at his home at 609 Bromley St. following a year's illness of the heart and kidneys.
Mr Essen was a native of Strasburg, Alsace-Lorraine, when the providence was French Territory, where he was born January 10, 1839. He came to this county as a young man and in this city, in 1870 , took Miss Katherine Rush as his wife, Mrs Essen died in 1882 leaveing 4 children. In 1884 Mr Essen was untied in marriage to Miss Addie Canfield who bore him 8 children, two of whom died in infancy. The second Mrs. Essen living. Mr. Essen's children by his frist wife are Henry Essen of Lime Springs, Mrs C.C. Williams of this city, John Essen of Iowa Falls, and Mrs G.R. Tanyer of Conrad. The children by his second wife are, Claude G. and Jacob Essen and Mrs W. H. Wolken of this city, and Mary, Bert, and Carl whom are at home.
Mr. Essen was a member of the German Lutheran Church in Dillon. Rev Karl Rest, pastor of the German Evangelical Church will have charge of the funeral services which will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Rock Valley cemetery.
