George and Wife Elizabeth had 7 known children: Elizabeth Phelps b. 1825 Oswego, NY (H) John Sessions; George Huntington b. 1826; Frederic Pitkin b. 1828 Oswego, NY; Francis Porter b. 1828 Oswego, NY (W) Ann Eliza Crane; George Huntington b. 1832 Oswego, NY (W) Emma Chichester; Catharine Whiting b. 1835 Oswego (H) Fisher Ames Baker; and Edward Thornton b. 1836 Massachusetts (W) Ellen Bowditch Thayer. George's siblings are: Susan b. 1775 (H) Joseph Daniels; Nancy b. 1776 (H) Nathan Gilmore; Eliab b. 1779 (W) Catherine Burge (records also have her name as Mary Burge); Julia b. 1781; Willis b. 1783 (W) Caroline Fairbanks; Maxey b. 1785 (W) Persis Metcalf; Joseph b. 1790; Herman b. 1792 (W) Caroline Thompson; and Clara b. 1796. George was born at the Fisher family estate formerly known as "Buck's Hill" in Franklin, Mass. He graduated from Brown University in 1813. Afterwards, he studied law in Litchfield, CT and would establish his profession in 1816 in Oswego, NY.. In 1828 he was elected to Congress but was successfully overturned by Silas Wright, Jr; to whom the seat was granted. In 1836 he would change pursuits and devoted his time to commercial endeavors in the flouring business. His first encounter with his future wife, Elizabeth Huntington, was in a stage coach ride from Northampton, Mass to Troy, NY where she taught at the Miss Willard School in Troy, NY. They were married on 12 May 1824 in Hadley, Mass.. They would have 5 sons and 2 daughters. Circa. 1840, George took his family to Paris to enhance his children's education. The family returned on the ship Kalamazoo and arrived at a port in New York City on 12 Sep 1842. He returned to Oswego, NY and unfortunately his mill would be destroyed by fire. His next endeavor was in the insurance industry and would become president of the Northwestern Insurance Co.. He and Elizabeth left Oswego, NY after 1855 and settled in New York City .
