George J. Grant

George J. Grant was born in Strathspey Invernesshire, Scotland. His father is most probably James J. Grant. It is not known exactly when George J. Grant immigrated from Scotland to Schoharie County, New York. However, it is probably accurate to say that he immigrated from Scotland to New York State with his father-in-law, Dr. James Stuart, in about 1774. According to Grant Family oral history, George J. Grant was one of five or six Grant brothers who immigrated in this same time period. In about 1781, George J. Grant married Mary Stuart, the daughter of Dr. James Stuart and Jean Grant. Dr. James Stuart was a Loyalist during the American Revolutionary War so it can probably be assumed the George J. Grant had Loyalist sympathies during the Revolutionary War. According to Ancestry.com, George J. Grant and his wife Mary Stuart are buried in Union Cemetery, Ingleside, Ontario. Their graves may have been moved there during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. George J. Grant and Mary Stuart had at least eleven children as follows:
