About George Lauder Greenway
G. Lauder Greenway, a former chairman of the Metropolitan Opera Association and a leader in cultural affairs in New York City. After becoming a member of the board of the Metropolitan Opera Association in 1942, he went on to serve as vice chairman and then, from 1956 to 1970, as chairman of the association, which runs the opera company. From 1970 to 1975, He served as honorary chairman of the association and had been an honorary director since 1977. He was also assistant secretary for the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1932 to 1940 and its secretary in 1940 and 1941. Held N.Y.U. Institute Posts. In addition, he served as vice chairman of the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University from 1946 to 1948 and as its acting director from 1948 to 1951. He later became chairman of the institute's advisory committee. In 1958, Mr. Greenway was awarded an honorary doctorate in fine arts from N.Y.U. He was cited as a zealous champion of the classic humanities in this cornucopian age of ingenious mechanics. He was a director of the Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York from 1948 to 1970 and a member of the board of Lincoln Center from 1964 to 1973. He was also a former member of the visiting committee for the music division of the New York Public Library and had served on the citizens' advisory committee of New York City's Cultural Affairs Department. A Graduate of Yale Mr. Greenway, who later decided not to use his first name of George, was born in Greenwich and attended Choate and Taft Schools before going to Yale University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1925 and a Ph.D. in 1930. He earned a master's degree in 1926 at Trinity College of Cambridge University in England. At Yale, he was an instructor in English in 1927-28 and 1931-32. He was closely associated with the cultural activities of Yale. He had been a trustee of the Associates in Fine Arts at Yale, a member of the Art Gallery committee and a member at large of the Yale University Council.
