About George Gruber

Funeral services for George Gruber, 71, retired Canton business man, were held at 2 p.m. today from Immanuel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert Morrison officiated with burial in Forest Grove Cemetery.

 Mrs. Robert E. Ayers was organist for the services and casketbearers were: Albert Brown, Kenneth Dudgeon, Robert Gorrell, Jack Hartmann, James L. Rogers and N. J. Wagner Sr.  Honorary casket bearers were Hilborne Johnson, Lawrence Barth, Raymond Hoffman, W. I. Ayers and Robert Matthews.
 Barkley-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 Mr. Gruber died unexpectedly about 11 a.m. Saturday while at work at the MFA Plant in Canton where he had been a part-time employee after retirement.
 The son of Peter and Elizabeth Reiter Gruber he was born March 22, 1898 near Canton.  On July 17, 1920 at Kahoka he was married to Miss Teresa Cottrell.  They farmed in the Centenary area for 13 years.  In 1933 they moved to Canton where Mr. Gruber became employed at the MFA Plant.  He later went into the feed and seed business and for many years owned and operated the Gruber Feed and Seed Store on Lewis Street.  He disposed of the business and retired from active business in July of 1965.
 Mr. Gruber was a member of Immanuel Methodist Church, the IOOF Lodge and the Pink Prairie Grange.
 In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Orville Goodwin.
 Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Mrs. John (Dorothy) Wills of Lewistown; 3 grandchildren; George W. (Skip) Wills of Kewanee, Ill., Mrs. Ron (Cindy) Messinger of Lawton, Okla., and John C. Wills of Lewistown; 1 great granddaughter and 2 brothers, Walter and Tom Gruber of Canton.
