The area that today is known as Smith County was part of the Choctaw Nation's domain, but this would end in 1830 with the “Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek.” This was the last treaty between the white man and the Choctaw, and it would be the one that gave up all remaining land in Mississippi.
Polkville is located in the northwest corner of Smith County, bordering Rankin and Scott counties. It is approximately 32 miles from Jackson, Mississippi and 7 miles from Interstate 20. The Town of Polkville recently increased their incorporated area and 14 sq miles were added to the town. Now there are no ad valorem taxes associated with Polkville.
Polkville is one of the oldest communities in Smith County being first settled around the 1830's and formed as a community in 1848 during the presidency of our 11th president, James K. Polk, for which Polkville gets its name.
