George Upham Harris, retired board chairman of Harris, Upham & Co., Inc., member of the New York Stock Exchange, died yesterday at Roosevelt Hospital. He was 73 years old and lived in New York.
Mr. Harris served the Wall Street community for many years as a governor of the New York Stock Exchange and on many committees, among them business conduct and publicity.
He also represented the Association of Stock Exchange Firms in a hearing on alleged propaganda activities by and on behalf of the exchange. His testimony recounted publicity work designed to improve public regard for the exchange and for Wall Street.
Mr. Harris was born in Chicago, studied at St. Mark's School in Southborough, Mass., and served in World War I. He was a partner in Harris, Winthrop & Co. from 1925 to 1929 and became a partner of the successor company, Harris, Upham & Co., in the latter year.
Partner for 40 Years
In 1965, when Harris, Upham was incorporated, Mr. Harris was named chairman. He had been a partner for 40 years. The concern is 74 years old and has offices in many cities throughout the country.
When Mr. Harris's younger brother, Henry Upham Harris, was elevated to chairman, Mr. Harris retired as chairman, while continuing as a director and member of the executive committee.
Mr. Harris was a bridge player of note, often playing in tournaments with Oswald Jacoby and others. He was a member of the Tuxedo, Racquet and Tennis, the Links and the Recess Clubs.
Surviving in addition to his brother, are his widow, Lucille: two daughters, Mrs. Amory Carhart and Mrs. Nicholas Biddle, and two other brothers, John and Lemont; a sister, Mrs. Harris Burton, and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. Monday at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 865 Madison Avenue.
